Maori's don't have a written language at all. Instead, they use symbols that are widely understood. The symbols are imprinted on carvings, knots and weavings.
Maori stories included legends of gods (yes, they do have gods), stories of hero's and tribal leaders. They told these stories in many different ways including dancing (kaka), songs (waiata), chants and prayers (karakia) and poems. Some stories are Te Pohu (The Bomb) and He Raiona i roto i nga Otaota (Listen to Your Ancestors).
They told stories to pass on information and knowledge successfully from one generation to the next. Through all this, the Maori's used their stories to record the past.
INTERESTING FACT:
There is a movie on Maori people. You might have heard of it, but it is called Moana.
