Aboriginal Art

They used artwork to teach and to pass on information to preserve their culture. Their art is based on story telling. There was no preference between art and craft.

Aboriginals had lots of types of art including rock painting, dot painting (in modern times), rock carving, bark painting, wood carving, sculptures and weaving. We are not sure why they rock painted but possible reason are to preform part of a ritual and paint instructions, they dot painted to eliminate the sacred elements and abstracted the designs into dots, again we are not sure why they carved rocks but possible reasons are the same as the rock painting, they painted bark to show instructions and were transient objects, they carved wood to help tell dreamtime stories and pass on their rules and important information and they made weavings to help them carry things to skin cloaks for warmth.

INTERESTING FACT:

Aboriginal art is the longest continuous tradition on the planet.
